What makes corrosion debris different
Mineral sediment, detergent residue and deteriorating metal can all look gritty. Corrosion debris tends to be gray, irregular and concentrated around the washplate or basket-support area. The hidden hub must be inspected before calling it sand from the plumbing.
A similar symptom can have a different cause on another washer. Water sediment, mold, fabric debris and excess product remain possible.

The diagnostic step was to remove the washplate and view the silumin hub or spider supporting the inner basket. Severe oxidation can release material into the wash water and may require the support or complete basket assembly rather than a cleaning-only visit.
