Seven Stored Codes Pointed Beyond a Single Drain Blockage

The GFW850SSN0 would not drain and failed test 12, but the pump and line were clean. Replacing the control board was explicitly reported to restore operation.

The evidence before the board was replaced

  • The stored numbers were 40, 38, 39, 18, 27, 23 and 19.
  • The washer did not drain and test 12 did not complete.
  • The drain pump and drain line were reported clean.
  • The discussion grouped the codes across water, vent or damper, latch and door-history areas.

The same symptom can have a different cause on another washer. A multiple-code pattern becomes useful only after each code is verified against the exact model documentation.

Why the pattern changed the diagnosis

A simple drain obstruction would not neatly explain stored complaints from several unrelated systems. The clean drain path and failed test kept the control system in focus. Technicians also noted that some vent or latch behavior may be addressed by model-specific firmware, but that route requires the proper GE tool and was not the repair reported here.

The reported result and its limit

The author returned to the discussion and stated that the control board was replaced and everything worked. That is an explicit result for this GFW850SSN0.

It does not mean every no-drain complaint or every one of these codes requires a board. Pump operation, wiring, firmware applicability and the current code history still need to be checked on the machine being serviced.

Electrical safety: do not energize the drain pump directly from board contacts or probe a live control as a homeowner procedure. These tests require the wiring diagram and qualified service.
