Both Evaporators Frosted Only Halfway

The pattern first resembled a restriction, but this 427S alternated two evaporators through solenoids. Test method and valve opening had to be proved before the frost line could be interpreted.

What complicated the frost pattern

  • Both evaporators showed a similar partial-frost pattern.
  • Each frosted at most about halfway during its cycle.
  • The system used separate solenoids for the two evaporators.
  • Pressure was described as approximately normal.
  • Evaporator fans had been turned off during observation.

A similar symptom can have a different cause on another wine cooler. Frost appearance depends on airflow, valve position, run time and sealed-system condition.

Why the fans had to remain on

The technical reply said to observe the evaporator with its fans operating. With a fully open solenoid, the frost pattern should develop more evenly under its designed airflow. A valve that does not open fully can resemble a restriction.

A technician had replaced solenoids on another similar unit, but the current 427S never reached a reported valve test or repair.

What a technician has to distinguish

  1. Run the exact service test that commands each solenoid.
  2. Keep the intended evaporator fans operating during observation.
  3. Compare both zones under the same run-time conditions.
  4. Only then separate incomplete valve opening from a sealed-system restriction.
Refrigerant and electrical safety: solenoid commands, pressures and sealed-system diagnosis are qualified-service tasks. Do not energize valves manually or add refrigerant from frost appearance.
