The Board Had Power, but the Physical Button Contacts Were Crushed
The GFDN240GL0WW looked like a failed control board. Inspection found evidence of prior access, and restoring the damaged contacts brought the dryer back without a board.
How the evidence changed the diagnosis
- The dryer did not respond to Power and the panel stayed dark.
- Supply was present at the panel.
- The button showed continuity when pressed.
- After the control was removed, contacts at one pin were found bent together.
- The contacts were straightened and the dryer worked again.
A similar symptom can have a different cause on another dryer. A dark panel can also follow a supply, harness or control failure; this case is valuable because the physical defect was seen and the result was reported.
Why continuity alone was not enough
The button could close during a meter check, yet the damaged contact geometry still prevented normal panel operation. The appliance also showed signs that someone had accessed the button area previously.
That history justified a visual and mechanical inspection before committing to an expensive electronic control.
What to tell the technician
- Whether buttons or trim are missing or misaligned.
- Whether the panel failed after previous service or forced button use.
- Whether any display segment flashes when Power is pressed.
Electrical safety: the successful repair required internal panel access. Disconnect the dryer before opening controls, and do not use a live panel as a button-contact test.
A repair that did not follow the obvious path
