The Spark Came From the Outlet, but the Short Was Inside the Dryer

The breaker reset only when the appliance was unplugged. A detached heater lead was hidden against the metal frame behind the wire bundle.

The evidence that separated house wiring from the appliance

  1. The breaker would not remain on with the dryer connected.
  2. With the dryer unplugged, the breaker could be reset.
  3. Reconnect attempt produced a visible spark at the receptacle.
  4. The motor and element were reported normal, and the board showed no visible burn mark.
  5. Inspection found a detached heater lead touching the metal cabinet.

The same symptom can have a different cause. A breaker trip can originate in the branch circuit, cord, terminal block, heater, motor or harness; this case confirms only its own fault.

Why the wire was easy to miss

The heater lead was short and had fallen behind the rest of the harness. The bare terminal was therefore not obvious during the first visual inspection even though it was touching the grounded cabinet.

The thread also mentioned a different recurring abrasion point near a door-switch lead, but that was not the fault confirmed on this dryer.

What the symptom means for the homeowner

Do not repeat the plug-in test or hold the breaker on. Leave the dryer disconnected and report the spark, breaker behavior and any recent service work. A technician should inspect the cord, terminal block and internal power wiring before energizing it again.

Immediate shock and fire hazard: a spark and breaker trip indicate a potentially live ground fault. Do not reconnect the dryer, reset the breaker repeatedly or open the cabinet unless qualified to make the circuit safe.
